Jones Women's Soccer wins 2023 Tom Shepherd Sportsmanship Award

JACKSON (via JCBobcats.com) – For the first time since 2014, the Jones College women's soccer team has claimed the Tom Shepherd Sportsmanship Award.

The award is presented annually to a men's and women's soccer program that best embodies sportsmanship in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) and the least amount of cards during the season. 

"To win is one thing," head coach Dolores Deasley said. "To win with class and character the way our ladies did this year says a lot about the type of people they are. We are very proud of how they carried themselves on and off the field."

The NJCAA Division II National Champions accumulated only three yellow cards in 19 matches en route to a school-record tying 17 wins and ran the table in Tucson, Arizona.

Tom Shepherd was the head soccer coach at Hinds Community College from 1988-99. He was an impactful coach throughout the state of Mississippi and worked tirelessly to promote junior college soccer.

The Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC)  is one of the premier community college conferences in the country and ranks among the elite in the nation in terms of alumni on professional sports teams. 

Current championship competition offered by the league includes competition for men in baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer and tennis.  

Women's competition is offered in the sports of basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.
