MACCC Releases Men's, Women's Basketball All-Conference and Individual Awards
JACKSON, Miss. -- Following an exciting NJCAA Region 23 Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament, the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) today released its 2023-2024 All-MACCC Teams and individual award winners. Honorees were selected by a panel of the men's and women's basketball head coaches.
Pearl River sophomore and MACCC Women's Basketball Player of the Year Taylor Johnson-Matthews led the league in PPG, averaging 18.3, with a 45.3 field goal percentage. The guard also averaged 6.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists. Johnson-Matthews helped lead the Lady Wildcats to a 27-4 (13-1, MACCC) record, and was a category lead in FG (209-461), steals (80) and overall points (566).
Women's Basketball Freshman of the Year awardee Miriam Prince, representing East Central, averaged 16.3 PPG with a 40.4 field goal percentage. She also averaged 3.7 rebounds per game and 2.7 assists. She was Top-5 in the MACCC in PPG, overall points (490), blocks (5), free throws (100-143) and minutes played (931).
Mississippi Gulf Coast's Hope Adams and Pearl River's Scotty Fletcher were named Co-MACCC Women's Basketball Coaches of the Year. The honor is awarded annually to the coach whose team wins the regular season.
Adams, in her 7th year with the Lady Bulldogs, led the team to a 23-4 (13-1, MACCC) record and the 2023-2024 NJCAA Region 23 Women's Basketball Tournament Championship, earning a berth to the NJCAA Women's Basketball Tournament for the first time since 1977. She was previously named the MACCC (then MACJC) Coach of the Year following the 2018-2019 campaign.
Fletcher is in his 9th season at the helm of Pearl River Women's Basketball, and the Lady Wildcats finished the season 24-4 (13-1, MACCC)--tied with Mississippi Gulf Coast for the top record in the conference.
Jones College's Dimp Pernell was voted MACCC Men's Basketball Player of the Year. Pernell was a major contributor to the Bobcats' success, and his performance both on offense and defense helped catapult the team to a 27-6 (11-3, MACCC) record and the 2023-2023 NJCAA Region 23 Men's Basketball Tournament Championship. Pernell registered 18.8 PPG, a 54.4 field goal percentage, 6.8 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists per game.
Cameron Wallace was named MACCC Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year. The Holmes College forward assisted the Bulldogs in earning season runner-up, with a 23-9 (9-5, MACCC) record. Wallace averaged 18.5 PPG, had a 57.9 field goal percentage, and averaged 7.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
There was also a regular season tie between Northeast Mississippi and Jones College, both earning 11-3 conference records. Jones College Head Coach Newton Mealer and Northeast Mississippi Head Coach Cord Wright, in their third and 10th seasons, respectively, were awarded the honors, which are given to the coaches with the regular season-winning record.
