MACCC Players of the Week - October 21
Volleyball - Offense
Izzi Barnes, Jones College
(Fr, MB - Gulfport, Miss., 11)
Against some of the nation's best teams last week, Izzi Barnes registered 49 kills, hit a team-best .333 and added 11 blocks in a 3-3 week, including an upset of No. 17 Illinois Central.
Volleyball - Defense
Claire Wicker, Jones College
(Fr, S - Oxford, Miss., 16)
In a 3-3 week for the Bobcats against four Top 20 opponents, Wicker had a team-best 52 digs and added five service aces.
Women's Soccer - Offense
Brooklynn Samonski, Holmes Community College
(Sophomore, MF - Nottingham, N.J., 13)
Samonski scored two big goals against No. 2 Northwest on Tuesday in Ridgeland. She took five shots with three on goal.
Women's Soccer - Goalkeeper
Laurel Conley, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
(So, GK - Ocean Springs, 0)
Laurel Conley, a sophomore keeper from Ocean Springs, stopped the only shot she saw in a 3-0 shutout of Copiah-Lincoln.
Men's Soccer - Offense
Emil Corfitzen, Pearl River Community College
(So, F - Copenhagen, Denmark, 10)
Emil Corfitzen (Copenhagen, Denmark) had an unreal night against No. 11 Hinds, scoring four goals and assisting on PRCC's fifth goal to take down the Eagles 5-2.
Men's Soccer - Goalkeeper
Hagan Pearce, Itawamba Community College
(FR, GK - Peppertown, MS, 0)
Hagan Pearce (Peppertown, MS) had another strong week in net to help the Indians go 1-0-1 on the week. He had six saves and allowed three goals, four of his six saves coming in the Indians' 2-1 upset of No. 7 Jones.
Football - Offense
Gavin Griffin, East Mississippi Community College
(So., RB - Canton, MS, 0)
EMCC sophomore running back Gavin Griffin enjoyed a career-best performance by rushing for 220 yards and four touchdowns in 22 attempts during the Lions' 49-27 home victory over Pearl River. He had 175 rushing yards, including runs of 50, 44 and 37 yards, and three scores by halftime. Griffin also had four pass receptions in the contest. With five 100-yard rushing efforts on the year and at least one rushing touchdown in each game (4 multi-TD games) this season, Griffin currently leads NJCAA Division I football with 14 rushing touchdowns on the year in addition to ranking third nationally with an average of 121.1 rushing yards per game. His 220 rushing yards vs. Pearl River rank second on EMCC's single-game list during the Buddy Stephens coaching era, while Griffin's four rushing TDs against the Wildcats are the most by an EMCC player in a game since 2017.
Football - Defense
Orel Gray, Itawamba Community College
(SO, DB - Jacksonville, FL, 5D)
Sophomore Orel Gray recorded 10 tackles, one assist, a tackle for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, a pass break-up, and returned one of his fumble recoveries for a 75-yard touchdown to seal the Indians' 44-28 win at Holmes to take over the top spot in the North Division.
Football - Special Teams
Hayden Wolfe, Northwest Mississippi Community College
(So, K/P - Clinton, Miss., 38)
Hayden Wolfe had one of his best games as a member of the Rangers, accounting for 15 points, going 6-6 on PAT's and making all three of his field goal attempts including a 37 yarder. He also was extremely proficient in kickoffs, with the first three all going for touchbacks and his fourth kickoff checked up at the two yard line and resulted in the Rangers getting the ball there.
