Northwest’s Sheffield earns MACCC North Offensive, Special Teams Players of the Year, Jones’ Henry takes home South Offensive Player of the Year honors
JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) North Division Champion Northwest Mississippi claimed two of the MACCC's individual football awards, as voted on by the conference's football coaches.
Northwest Mississippi's D.T. Sheffield captured both the MACCC North Offensive Player of the Year and Special Teams Player of the Year honors. Northeast Mississippi's Triston Newson was named MACCC North Defensive Player of the Year. Jones' Robert Henry won the MACCC South Offensive Player of the Year award, Pearl River's Bryan Whitehead, III earned MACCC South Defensive Player of the Year and Mississippi Gulf Coast's Gabe Showalter earned MACCC South Special Teams Player of the Year.
Sheffield had 9 touchdowns and 45 receptions for 577 yards. He ranks 3rd in the NJCAA in touchdowns with 9. Sheffield was also effective on punt return duty for the No. 2 Rangers, with 216 return yards and a single touchdown on the year.
Henry led the NJCAA in nearly every statistical category, including yards rushing (1302), rushes (237), yards per game (130.2) and touchdowns (18). Henry received national recognition when he was named NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week following a three-touchdown game against recently-crowned conference champion East Mississippi.
Newson ranked second in the NJCAA in tackles (107.0) and assists (56). He also ranked 5th in the nation in fumble return touchdowns (1). The sophomore linebacker from Independence, Miss. averaged 11.9 tackles per game, and registered three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Newson picked up an NJCAA Football Defensive Player of the Week award for his performance in Northeast Mississippi's win over East Mississippi.
Whitehead, II led the MACCC in sacks with 11.5, and was a terror for offenses, putting up conference-leading numbers for fumble recoveries and fumble return touchdowns. He was integral in the team's turnaround, earning MACCC Defensive Player of the Week honors along the way.
Showalter, a freshman from Ocean Springs, Miss., was a secret weapon for Mississippi Gulf Coast. He was atop the league in field goals made (8) and field goal percentage (80%).
The MACCC's head coaches select Coaches of the Year in both the North and South Division. Northwest Mississippi Head Coach Benjy Parker and Holmes Head Coach Marcus Wood, Sr. were voted Coach of the Year for their leadership of The Rangers and The Bulldogs, while Pearl River Head Coach Seth Smith–who led an historic turnaround for The Wildcats, earned MACCC South Coach of the Year.
Parker, in his seventh season as head coach at Northwest Mississippi, led the 2022 Rangers to an undefeated season and a MACCC North Division title. He was previously named Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2020.
In his first season, Wood, Sr. led a major turnaround of The Bulldogs, taking the team from a 1-8 (1-5 MACCC) record in 2021 to 5-4 (3-3 MACCC) and a hair away from the playoffs in 2022.
Hired in 2020, Smith has been a change agent for Pearl River, taking the team from a 2-7 (0-6 MACCC) season in 2021 to narrowly missing the MACCC playoffs in 2022 with a 6-3 (4-2 MACCC) record. A native of Millard, Mississippi, Smith previously served as head coach at East Central High School.
